Bamboo Rugs

Bamboo RugsConsidering its height, you might think that the bamboo is a tree. The fact is, bamboo belong to the grass family and it is the largest member for very obvious reasons. Bamboo has been used in the furniture and flooring industry for quite some time because the cost is a fraction of the price of hardwood floors.

Also, bamboo is readily available: bamboo can grow to full height and diameter in just 3-4 months… that’s about a growth of 47.6 inches per day! They can even reach maximal growth rate exceeding 39 inches per hour… very impressive. This must be the reason why they are a symbol of longevity in China since they surge upward and reach long heights. Bamboos are found in abundance in Asia and serve as main sources of income in some Southeast Asian countries.

The popularity of bamboo for furniture and flooring probably started when people searched for alternatives for hardwood that were not as expensive. Being a sustainable resource, ingenious craftsmen were able to experiment with what else they can do with bamboo wood aside from flooring and furniture pieces and eventually found out that they can be made into rugs as well. Today, you can see numerous bamboo rugs of different designs, colors, shapes, and patterns gracing the homes of many people.

Bamboo rugs add a modern and oriental look to any room. They are often mixed with other materials such as jute or sisal and bound at the edges with cotton binding for a more exotic feel. Finished bamboo rug items come mounted on a felt or fabric backing to add cushion and to prevent it from scratching your floor.

How to Clean Your Bamboo Rug

  • Shake the rug gently to remove loose dirt.
  • You can vacuum from different directions, repeating several passes over each section of the rug to achieve best results.
  • Wipe spills immediately. Let the cloth absorb the spill by pressing it firmly around the spill using a clean cloth. Blot spills if needed.
  • If there are solid materials that are stuck on your bamboo rug, use a spatula or spoon to remove it then wipe using a clean cloth.
  • Dry a wet bamboo rug with a cloth or any other absorbent material. You could also use a fan to dry the rug faster.

Maintenance of Your Bamboo Rug

  • Never place the bamboo rug in direct sunlight.
  • Rotate the rug periodically (every 6 months) to alter the traffic pattern of your rug.
  • Don’t place your bamboo rug in places that get wet easily. Dry your rug immediately if it gets wet.
  • Don’t roll a damp bamboo rug; wait for it to dry completely first.
