One household cleaning product that has so many housekeepers excited about is a central vacuum. What is exactly a central vacuum and why has it created such a buzz in housekeeping? In the past, we have used the standard movable vacuum unit to clean the house. The main downside to the standard vacuum is the irritating noisiness of this machine and the difficulty in moving it around to clean the other rooms of the house. A central vacuum, on the other hand, is a system with its main power unit installed in the basement or garage. The hoses and vacuums are attached within the walls and exits through small openings or inlets where you can plug in your vacuuming equipment, switch it on, and start vacuuming with ease. A vacpan can also be installed together with the hoses within the walls; this allows you to sweep dirt from non-carpeted floors into your vacpan to be suctioned up. As opposed to standard vacuums, you don’t have to carry your central vacuum around the house to clean any type of flooring: carpet, hardwood, vinyl, cork, marmoleum, ceramic, marble, etc.
Depending on the size of your room and needs, you can have different lengths of central vacuum hoses to clean your rooms. Various brushes, shaped tools, and dust pans can also be purchased so you can reach the more difficult corners or crevices in the room. With a central vacuum installed, there’s no reason for your house to be left undusted and dirty. Think of central vacuums as another highly useful gift of technology to humankind… and your floor.
Advantages of Central Vacuums
- Improved air quality. Central vacuums have superior cleaning power over standard vacuums and leave virtually zero dust and debris in your home. The ease of emptying the dust-collecting bags of the central vacuum also keeps the dust from being blown back to your house.
- Less noise. No more headaches caused by noisy vacuums! The only sound you’ll hear in central vacuums is the soft suctioning sound while you vacuum the room, which is similar to the soothing purring of a cat. The louder sound of the vacuum is confined in the area where you have installed the main power unit, far away from your ears.
- Cleaner house. Thanks to a greater suctioning power than your regular vacuum (three to five times stronger), you can have a relatively cleaner flooring.
- Convenient and easy use. You don’t have to carry a bulky piece of equipment when you use a central vacuum. The only things you’ll carry are lightweight hoses and vacuum attachment if there are any. That’s already a big load off your back.
- The installation of a central vacuum in the house adds to the value of your house should you decide to sell it in the future.
- Although the cost of installing a central vacuum is quite steep, its uses and benefits far outweigh the expenses that you paid for this equipment.
How to Choose the Right Central Vacuum for Your House
With the widespread popularity of central vacuums, it is not unusual to find numerous designs and manufacturers of this equipment. Choosing the right central vacuum for your home may be difficult. In choosing the central vacuum that fits your house, it is advised that you examine the physical structure and electrical system in your house and tell your supplier about it so they can suggest the best type of vacuum for your house. Here are some tips on how to choose a central vacuum for your house:
- Make sure your hose will fit your electric powerhead. Take a look at your inlets. For electrical inlets, you can have a direct connect hose. For standard inlets, you can have a corded or pigtail end where you can connect an electrical powerhead.
- Choose a powerhead manufactured in Europe as those made Mexico or China are not very durable. Also choose one with a cogged belt as they are also more long-lasting than the other kinds.
- Don’t buy a powerhead with plastic wheels on the meta axles. Select one with rubber.
- Find a powerhead with height adjustments that can reach different carpet heights.
- Consider buying a powerhead with a motor reset or a computer chip that can sense the speed of the powerhead motor that can automatically shut down if it turns slowly. This is a safety measure that can save your powerhead from burning if it sucks up something that jams or gets stuck in it.
