Cleaning Garage Floors

Cleaning Garage FloorsWhen people visit your home, you don’t usually let them enter through the garage or entertain them there, right? So why is it important to make your garage clean and presentable?

Naturally, the garage is where you park your car as well as other unwanted items in your home that can still be used on some occasions like a ladder, spare chairs, tables, appliances, couch, etc. These things usually sit in your garage collecting dust, grime, attracting allergens, and all sorts of things; your lack of attention in maintaining it may even attract other strange ‘beings’ that can be hiding and partying in your garage while you are sleeping.

Perhaps the number one reason why you should clean your garage is your concern for the health and safety of your family members. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand that even though your garage is located a few distances from your home, an unclean and unkempt garage can still be hazardous for your family’s health and safety; maybe your playful child wanders into your garage, runs and slips on the greasy floor, or catches an allergy while looking for something in this dusty ‘bat-cave’.

A garage can also be a livable space if it is maintained and well-kept. Another big reason why you should clean your garage is when you would like to install new flooring

Tips and Steps on How to Clean Your Garage Floor

Cleaning your garage is simple and you don’t really need professional help (unless you don’t have enough time to do it yourself). You just need to empty your garage, separate the things that you can use and get rid of things that you don’t need, or have a garage sale if you want to earn some cash out of your old stuff. After you have emptied it, sweep, dust, and mop the floor. You can also scrub the floors using some soap and water, depending on the type of flooring that you have in your garage. Probably the most difficult part in cleaning your garage flooring is removing tough and greasy stains that won’t disappear with just scrubbing with soap and water. Here are some tips on how to clean stubborn stains on your garage flooring:

  • Put some soaking material like sawdust, baking soda, old newspapers, or any other absorbent materials onto the stain if it is still wet. Complete absorption may take up to two days depending on the stain. Dispose the absorbent material you used properly.
  • Pour some cola on the spot to and see if the stain dissolves. For more difficult stains, try using trisodium phosphate. You can also use hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, or bleach. Use gloves when applying these chemicals.
  • Apply some proprietary cleaners from the hardware for stains that have dried and already settled. ‘Swab’ and ‘Gunk’ are some products that you can use to remove concrete stains. Follow application instructions and then rinse with water. Sprinkle some baking soda to neutralize the chemical residues.
  • In addition to using chemical and natural cleaners, you can also pressure hose your garage flooring.
