Glass Tile Flooring

glass tile flooringGlass décor has been in use for centuries. Visit old and famous churches, temples, palaces, and you will see the many applications of stained glass in windows, roofs, doors, walls, and even floors which has made these buildings more eye-catching.

A glass tile floor is a very versatile material to use as it blends well with any interior and exterior surface. The wide array of designs, textures, and motifs of glass tiles makes it ideal to use in any room, especially kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and pool areas.

The use of glass tiles to decorate and design buildings can also be commonly seen today in shopping malls, hotels, banks, and other commercial buildings. Architects and interior designers are also fond of using modern glass tiles because of its various curving possibilities that is best for tiling wall niches and columns.

The beauty of glass tile flooring stems from its effect of bringing a sense of openness, space, and light into any room. Combine with ceramics or porcelain tiles and watch an ordinary room instantly transform into something extraordinary. With numerous options as décor and design, the application of glass tiles in your bedroom, kitchen, or powder room can create such a wonderful ‘facelift’ and makeover especially with the brightness and depth this superb material brings. Add a glass tile backsplash and see your home become a masterpiece in its own right.

What’s so Special about Glass Tile Flooring?

Glass tile flooring isn’t as fragile and breakable as you may think. In a test made by the American Society for Testing and Materials, glass tiles have a breaking strength of 420 lbs, an abrasion resistance index of 137.5, and a hardness measure rating of 5-6 which means they are in fact highly durable, sturdy, and safe for use even in high traffic areas. Some manufacturers also produce glass tile flooring with their own special formula of providing reinforced hardness and strength. Below is a list of the advantages of using glass tile flooring for your home or office:

  • Glass tile flooring provides a dramatic accent to the room. It makes an illusion of a bigger space and has an aspect that can make the room look bright and illuminating. The transparency of the glass tile also adds depth that can complement furniture in a stunning manner.
  • Almost all materials used for the creation of glass tiles are recycled from bottles, windshields, mirrors, etc. making it an environment-friendly choice. These materials are collected, crushed, and then mixed with metallic oxides for added strength. Color may also be added to create that unique shade, texture, and appearance that will make any room shine. This mixture is then poured into molds and fired at high temperatures to form.
  • Glass tiles are also durable and strong. They can withstand high traffic and even extreme weather conditions when placed outside. Depending upon the manufacturer, glaze may be added to contribute to its strength and durability.
  • Water can’t seep into glass tile flooring and so it is a great choice for use in high moisture areas like the bathroom, kitchen, and pool area.
  • Glass tile flooring is absolutely easy to clean! Just wipe it and it’s as good as new.
  • There are no allergens in glass tile flooring making it safe for use even for the most hypersensitive member of the family.

The only drawbacks that I can say of glass tile flooring is that it can be cold to the feet especially during winter and can be really slippery when it is wet. However, manufacturers have solved this ‘slippery’ problem by putting anti-slip glaze properties into their glass tile products. In-floor heating can also allay that cold-to-the-feet feeling. As expected, glass tiles can be quite expensive but the choice of putting them on your home and seeing its beauty and elegance is truly an investment of a lifetime.
