Marmoleum Installation Tips

  • Marmoleum can be installed on smooth substrates on all grade levels
  • The permanent HVAC must be operational and you must set it to at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit for at least one week before installation. Remember to acclimate the Marmoleum 48 hours prior to actually installing it
  • Conduct moisture tests on concrete slabs regardless of the age or grade level ofhe floor.
  • Also conduct calcium chloride tests in accordance with ASTM F1869. The moisture vapor emissions from the concrete must not exceed 5.0 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. in a 24 hour time frame when using Forbo L 910 adhesive, or 3.0 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. when using Forbo 414 adhesive (Canada Only). When the moisture vapors are exceeding these levels, contact us or Forbo for additional instructions.
  • From the center of the concrete slab, measure the relative humidity in accordance with ASTM F2170. The relative humidity must not exceed 75%.
  • Conduct a pH test and make sure it does not exceed a pH of 10.
  • Use only the recommended patching and leveling compounds specified by the manufacturers.
  • Make sure to test the adhesive to see how well it is going to bond. Bond test will help in determining the working time of the adhesive and you’ll be able to identify any potential problems.
  • Only use Forbo L 910 adhesive of Forbo 414 adhesive (available in Canada only) for smooth and flat installations and also when flashcoving.
  • Always use a 1/16″ x 1/16″ x 1/16″ square notched trowel.
  • Remember to install the rolls and cuts in consecutive order. Never reverse the sheets for seaming.
  • Relax the roll curls prior to adhering any cuts.
  • Work at a steady pace and install one sheet at a time. Make sure to place the Marmoleum into wet adhesive for a strong bond. When installing on non-porous floors, allow a short amount of time for the adhesive to develop some body before applying the material. DO NOT ALLOW THE ADHESIVE TO DRY.
  • Roll the Marmoleum flooring immediately in both directions with a 100 lbs. roller. Go back and check to make sure good contact has been made with the adhesive and the product.
  • If you are going to install the Marmoleum using a stove bar, first flat trowel the adhesive onto the material backing in the stove bar area, then weigh down after rolling.
  • Underscribe seams and cut the Marmoleum on a slight bevel.
  • Heat welding is also an option and it is recommended. Only use Marmoleum welding rods. Do not use chemical welds.
