Mosaic Cork Tiles

Mosaic Cork TilesThe fact that cork floors are environmentally friendly and a renewable resource is well known – at least among green flooring aficionados. Besides its impeccable green credentials a cork floor is amazingly beautiful. It is one natural floor that you can install even in moisture prone areas like the shower.

Some of the most dramatically beautiful floors can be made from Mosaic Cork Tiles. You can either select a predesigned mosaic tile floor or pick individual tiles and create the floor of your dreams. Environment friendly, stylish, warm, soft to feel and stunning in appearance – mosaic cork tile flooring beats almost every other flooring on multiple parameters.

Cork Tiles

Cork tiles are made from post industrial cork pieces. These are ground, mixed with glue and pressed to create cork floors. This pest and moisture resistant material is available with dark swirls in its designs or with a laminate layer on top that can mimic almost any flooring material.

Mosaic Cork Tiles

  • Mosaic cork tiles are 6 mm thick circular discs made from recycled wine corks.
  • An advantage of mosaic cork tiles is that they can be used in small areas where larger tiles cannot be used.
  • It is also possible to pick cork tiles and use them to design a floor that is one in a million for all practical purposes.
  • It may be necessary to grout around individual cork discs before installation is complete, but the results are worth the extra time spent in installation.
  • Cork is a soft material therefore cutting or shaping a tile is not back breaking work.
  • Installing Cork Tile Floor

    • Cork can be installed as glued floor or as floating floor.
    • It may be possible to install cork floors as floating floors over in floor heat. Generally users find a glue-down floor to perform better than floating floors. You can discuss this aspect of cork flooring at any store of Contempo Floor Coverings.
    • If choosing a glue-down installation, you may select pre-glued floor tiles that make installation a breeze.
    • Floating Cork floors can be installed directly over a vapor barrier.

    Installing Mosaic Cork Tiles

    • Mosaic cork tiles must be glued to the floor.
    • The existing floor is completely removed and cleaned. The circular discs are glued to a sheet. The sheet with the mosaic cork tiles is put in place. It is possible to cut the sheet to any size with a sharp utility knife.
    • Once put in place, the tiles can be stained. After staining, the tiles are covered with a layer of water based polyurethane, the joints are filled with an un-sanded grout, and an even amount of polyurethane is applied to complete the installation.

Unusual and Non Flooring Applications of Mosaic tiles

    • Mosaic cork tiles can be used in the shower area. Cork is relatively unaffected by moisture, is anti-slip and soft making it an ideal choice for the bathroom.
    • Cork tiles can also be used as the back splash of a shower.
    • If using mosaic cork tiles in moisture prone areas, you will need to ensure that the tiles have been properly sealed in compliance with warranty conditions.

Cork is a great flooring material for any area. With mosaic tiles it becomes that much more versatile. Besides cork there is scarcely another natural flooring product that can handle the rigors of the bathroom. Neither solid hardwood nor coir or sisal rugs can withstand moisture as well as a cork floor. Engineered bamboo is a bit more stable but mosaic cork tiles are arguably the best natural material for a moisture prone area. With mosaic cork tiles it is possible to look beyond traditional flooring choices like ceramic and stone tiles that are routinely used in the bathroom.
