Restaurant and Kitchen Floor Ideas

Restaurant and Kitchen Floor IdeasAre you planning to change the look of you restaurant? Are you fed up with your current kitchen flooring and would like to change it? Whether you want to relieve the discomfort of your employees or are driven by the desire to enhance the ambiance of your restaurant, a careful consideration of your flooring choices is a must.

The most important demand form a kitchen floor is functionality. A kitchen floor must be easy to clean, resistant to moisture, long lasting, help the staff stand on its feet for long periods, and be able to withstand the force of fallen utensils and high traffic. A restaurant floor by contrast needs to be in harmony with the business model and strategy of the establishment. The restaurant floor that will suit a fast food outlet and another that would be better for a restaurant serving gourmet food can be as different as chalk and cheese. Hardwood, vinyl, linoleum, rubber, tiles, stone, and even carpets can be used with great effect in restaurants and kitchens.

Flooring ideas for a Kitchen

  • Rubber – rubber mats are soft and make it easy to stand for long periods. In a kitchen you can install the rubber floor all over the kitchen floor or confine it to flooring in the work area. Rubber mats will reduce chances of slipping and are easy on the feet. Should water or grease be spilled on to it – cleaning rubber is not a difficult chore either.
  • Ceramic tiles – Ceramic tiles are water and grease resistant. Commercial grade tiles have excellent wear properties and hold up well to heavy traffic. It is also possible to mix and match tiles of different colors and create interesting patterns on your kitchen and restaurant floor. If choosing ceramic tiles, you must ensure that all the joints are properly sealed. This will reduce seepage and prevent food and debris from getting lodged in the gaps in the joints between tiles. Tiles may become slippery when water or grease falls on to it. It is therefore better to choose anti-slip tiles.
  • Stained concrete – Staining the concrete floor of your kitchen or restaurant is a good and inexpensive idea. A good workman can create interesting designs on the floors by using little more than cement colors. Concrete floors are tough and put up to a lot of abuse. While a stained concrete slab is cheaper you must ensure that your flooring contractor has a lot of experience in laying a stained concrete floor and has an impeccable reputation. After all your floor is in his hands.
  • Stone flooring – You can choose a stone flooring for your kitchen. A stone floor made of hard non porous stones like granite are the best for a kitchen floor. Marble is also a good choice but it is easily stained by spilled chemicals and cannot be cleaned by harsh acidic cleaning agents should the need arise.

    • Hardwood flooring – Hardwood flooring is not suited to the kitchen as it is not as wear resistant as some other flooring options. Hardwood floors are also easily damaged by water. In a gourmet restaurant, a hardwood floor may not be out of place. If you do choose hardwood flooring remember to look for a commercial grade that has much better wear characteristics compare d to the residential grade wood floor.
    • Carpet flooring – Carpets can add warmth and style to any room and a restaurant is no exception. The biggest drawback of a carpet floor in a restaurant is that a carpet may trap food particles and develop ugly stains due to accidental spills.
    • Other flooring choices – Rubber, Ceramic tiles, Stone, Vinyl and Linoleum are some other popular flooring choices for restaurant floors.

A floor is a great design element. It must therefore be treated with the respect that is due to it. There are a multitude of options that you can consider for the restaurant or kitchen floor. At Contempo Floor Coverings you can select the flooring of your choice from a plethora of residential and commercial flooring products.

stained concrete is a great choice. picking the topcoat or sealer for it is highly important. go with a high solids sealer….preferably two part (a,b) for a tougher product
