The tiles are extremely fragile and pick up stains at the drop of a hat so extreme vigilance is required during installation.
  • Damaged by Extreme Weather Conditions -Saltillo tiles are extremely sensitive to harsh climatic conditions. They are not really meant for outdoors, except in areas where the climatic conditions remain relatively mild and constant throughout the year. However, they do work well within the house where they are not exposed to nasty weather elements.
  • Not Durable -If you are looking for a flooring material that you can forget about once it is installed, Saltillo tiles are probably not what you want. They will not be your loyal companion for years as they are not durable enough. They tend to chip or crack easily. Tile restoration is something that you have to be prepared for.
  • Difficult Care and Maintenance- Saltillo Tiles require great care and maintenance. They are probably more difficult to maintain than any hardwood flooring . They are extremely porous and tend to absorb any liquid that spills and stain easily. They are not a good choice for kitchen and dining areas as you will have to armed with a mop at all times.
  • For regular cleaning of Saltillo tile flooring a damp mop can be used. Lots of water can easily damage the tiles. Harsh chemical cleaners are to be avoided like the plague as they can ruin the tiles. Periodically, sealants can be applied to keep the tiles in good condition. Thankfully, present day sealants have made the maintenance of Saltillo tiles much easier. The penetrating sealants maintain the natural look of the tiles where as the surface sealants add a pleasant glaze to the tile.
