Hardwood flooring can also be categorized by its edges (where each piece of wood touches the next piece).Basically, there are three kinds of hardwood flooring according to the type of edge it can have. These are micro-beveled/eased edges, beveled edges and square edges.
Micro-Beveled / Eased Edges
Eased edges are used to help level minor disparities between hardwood flooring pieces especially if there is a height difference between two pieces. This type of edge is also known as a micro-beveled edge. Some manufacturers add an eased edge to both the length of the planks as well as the end joints.
Beveled Edges
Beveled edges are very distinct in hardwood flooring because of the very distinguished groove between planks. This is a favorite among homes in the countryside. The hardwood flooring is treated with urethane finishes at the factory, sealing the beveled edges completely. This feature helps when cleaning dirt and grit, by making it easier to sweep and vacuum the hardwood flooring.
Square Edges
Square edged hardwood flooring is a favorite among contemporary homes. With square edges, the edges of all the wood boards meet at the square edge. This creates a very clean, uniform and smooth hardwood flooring surface. The floor will have a consistent look from board to board. Also, this particular edge style gives a very structured and formal feeling to the room.
