Does leather flooring scratch and stain easily?

Bonded leather is manufactured by grinding up different leather pieces, mixed up with a bonding agent which will lead to the end-product of a completely different leather style. On the other hand, Man-made leather is composed of rubber, plastic and fiber. The main difference between Man-made leather and real leather is that the man-made kind is less expensive than real leather.

 

What are the different types of Full Grain Leathers?

There are four primary types of Full Grain Leathers: belting leather, saddle-type leather, Nappa leather and exotic skins. Belting leather was primarily manufactured to drive pulleys in industrial companies in the past. This type of leather undergoes a special tanning process making it very strong. Saddle-type leather is the middle ground between Napa leather and belting leather in terms of texture and feel. Nappa leather is very refined and sophisticated, with a soft and supple texture. Exotic skins are any skin used that is not cowhide. The most popular kinds of which are sourced from alligators, ostrich, eel or snake. Even more exotic leathers are made from lizards and sharks.

 

What factors affect the different grades of leather?

Leather is treated as a natural commodity and it undergoes the same grading system as diamonds. In line with this, the fewer the flaws in the hide, the more difficult it is to acquire. This means that the better quality leathers are very rare and since the supply is very low, the prices will be driven up.

 

Which countries produce the best leather?

This is a hard question but generally the cool climates in Northern Europe plus the upbringing of animals in pens and ranches all contribute to the production of better hides, which in turn will be manufactured into better quality leather.

What are the different processes used to make leather?

There are essentially three important processes and these are preparation, tanning and crusting. In the preparation stage, the skin is prepared for tanning purposes. Different stages occur in this process and this usually includes soaking, lining, fleshing and splitting. Tanning is the process which is characterized by converting the protein found in the skin which makes it into a more stable material so that it can be molded into different applications. Crusting is a process where the hide is lubricated and thinned.
