Green flooring certifications are how green organizations certify products as green. Consumers can look for these certifications to help them find green flooring products. Each certification has different degrees of green.

Green Seal

Green Seal is an independent and third party organization which uses an International Standards Organization (ISO) rating systems to certify green flooring. ISO standards are issued by numerous countries who worked together during the 1990s in creating standards when it comes to environmental management.

LEED

This certification which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is issued by the US Green Building Council. LEED has four certification levels which are Certified, Gold, Silver and Platinum which are issued to new construction projects. The level of certification is dependent on how many credits are being received for the following categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, atmosphere and energy, indoor environmental quality and materials and resources. Projects that are covered by LEED are the following: interior projects, existing buildings, new commercial construction and major renovations.

EcoLogo

What makes this certification stand apart is because it is being issued by the Canadian government starting from 1988. EcoLogo is a popular and widely-known symbol used for identifying eco-friendly products and services. This certification encompasses 120 categories by setting standards and certifying products. The EcoLogo is very beneficial for the consumers because people will finally know how to identify, buy and promote Green products.

FSC

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has offices in more than 45 countries all over the world. The main project of this organization is to promote the right way of managing the world’s forests in a responsible manner. If a product has an FSC label, consumers are rest assured that the products are independently certified and it came from well-managed forests. In turn, a managed forest meets the social, economic and ecological needs of today and the future generation as well. The FSC label is also very prevalent in hardwood and bamboo materials to be used for flooring.
